Stefan-Morsch-Stiftung HLA-Laboratory

The HLA –Laboratory of the Stefan-Morsch-Stiftung under the Direction of Dr. Angelika Himmel and Dr. Marco Schäfer was established in 1997. With a staff of 12 members and a high degree of automation the team currently processes 30.000 - 40.000 typing requests per year. The usual typing methods for the molecular HLA-typing have been established in the HLA-laboratory of the Stefan-Morsch-Stiftung. The laboratory’s quality standards are constantly controlled and certified by continuous participation in national and international external proficiency testing, as well as on-site inspections by the international societies.

The HLA-Lab of the Stefan-Morsch-Stiftung is accredited by the international society ASHI (American Society for Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics) by the European society EFI (European Federation of Immunogenetics).

HLA-Workshop 2010

Services offered
HLA-Typing of the genes relevant to transplant outcome: HLA-A, HLA-B, HLA-Cw, HLA-DRB1, HLA-DRB3/4/5 und HLA-DQB1 for the registration of voluntary stem cell donors in the registry and in the course of a donor search for allogeneic stem cell transplantation.
Testing of additional loci will be performed upon inquiry.
Resolution: Typing can be performed in low- (2-digit), intermediate- or high resolution (4-digit).

Established Methods: DNA-Typing by: hybridization with probes (SSO-Method), or by different PCR-primers (SSP-Method) or by sequencing (SBT-Method).
The operation of different automated laboratory systems allows a high throughput of samples.

HLA-Typing for confirmation/exclusion of individual HLA-antigenes or HLA-alleles in connection with disease association (for example HLA-B27-confirmation in suspected cases of Bechterews disease or HLA-DQB1*0602-confirmation in suspected cases of narcolepsia) or in connection with pharmacogenetics (HLA-B*5701-confirmation prior to the usage of Abacavir in the HIV-Therapy).

Sequencing of genes (for external use) maybe performed upon inquiry.
